Calvin Crowner - UO Producer's Letter

This is your captain speaking - we'll be climbing to an altitude of 36,000 feet. Expect some turbulence on ascent. Once we reach cruising altitude, I'll turn off the seat belt sign, and you'll be permitted to move about the cabin . Due to FAA regulations smoking is not permitted unless you're sharing the good stuff with the rest of the crew. Thank you for flying Britannia Airlines?
Twelve years and a Guinness Book record mention later, we are still here!
We've recently successfully launched UO's 8th Expansion, bringing back programs that independent boards said would never occur .Oh, and I'm not certain if you noticed, but there are more people playing Ultima Online again every day. I know. I have our subscriber numbers on refresh. It makes me smile.
I heard you really liked Halloween. Yes, Sakkarah and the rest of the folks supporting her on live got rid of Death or Treat this year. She's got a few nice things lined up for the holidays. Expect to see more on the holiday publish in the next week.
More importantly, something I know you have been waiting for engineering has been working on speedhacking and 3rd party program detection. We're closer each day to a solution, but are not publishing it until it's solid.
Finally, as a former Air Force Officer and graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, I hope everyone found time to show their appreciation for those currently serving in our Armed Forces as we celebrated Veteran's Day earlier this week. We here at Mythic make games. We don't defend against all enemies foreign and domestic. We make a worlds where it's possible to be the conquerors and almost king. Here we have a different battle for good and evil. As we've seen, life is all too real sometimes. Thanks for making us the place you care to escape.

Q&A: Making Ultima Online's Continuing Adventures

Originally created by Richard Garriott and Origin Systems in 1997, Ultima Online was one of the first successful PC MMO games launched, and still has a sizable enough audience that Electronic Arts maintains and improves the game until this day.
Though the team that handles the game is now part of Warhammer Online creator Mythic Entertainment, that wasn't always the case. Tim Cotten, lead designer of the game, was originally an EA employee -- and he says that one of the team members even goes back to the Origin days.
Of course, updating an MMO with old tools and a variety of clients -- three are presently supported by the team -- is no small challenge, and Mythic continues to roll out new expansions for UO, with Ultima Online: Stygian Abyss debuting in September.
Here, Cotten discusses the title's unique audience expectations and how he and his team address pipeline and tech issues in a game that was originally released in 1997 -- but recently saw its biggest expansion ever.

EA and Ultima Online Announce Return to Britannia Campaign in Honor of 12th Anniversary Celebration
New Campaign Will Re-Activate Former Players Accounts for Unlimited Free Play Now Through October 16th
FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) studio, today announced the Return to Britannia Campaign in celebration of the 12-year anniversary of Ultima Online (UO). As part of the Return to Britannia Campaign, all former players are being welcomed back to UO, one of the longest-running MMORPGs in history, for unlimited free game play through October 16th. Closed accounts in good standing have been re-activated, and former players can log back into the game using their original user name and passwords.
New content available to returning players through the Return to Britannia Campaign includes Mondains Legacy, the 7th UO expansion which introduced the playable Elven race and dangerous, new dungeons to explore. Mondains Legacy was made available at no charge in August 2009 to existing subscribers and to new players as part of the Ultima Online 14-day free trial.
We're hoping that, as part of the Return to Britannia Campaign, former players will once again rediscover the joys of Ultima Online, said Jeff Hickman, Executive Producer for Mythic Entertainment. ?UO was the first love of many MMORPG players, and it still holds a special place in their hearts after 12 glorious years. I think returning players will be pleasantly surprised to find a thriving and vibrant community from around the world ready to welcome back their former compatriots and include them in their ongoing adventures.
Players returning to Ultima Online through the Return to Britannia Campaign can download and install the UO client for free at: http://www.uoherald.com/trial/. Players who no longer have access to their Ultima Online username and password can retrieve their account information at: http://support.ea.com.
Ultima Online: Stygian Abyss, the 8th expansion was released earlier this month and revolves around the introduction of the playable Gargoyle race. Players will also find expansive new areas to explore, including Ter Mur, the Gargoyle homeland, and the Stygian Abyss the largest dungeon area ever introduced to Ultima Online. Thi...

Ultima Online is a shining example in the MMO world. It is the oldest running MMO right now that everyone remembers. Ultima Online just celebrated its twelve year anniversary and has twenty seven active servers around the world. Many MMO companies wish they could have at type of success. MMORPG.com sat down with Tim Cotton and talked about Ultima Online?s rich history, its most recent expansion, and its bright future.
Tim pointed out right away that ?Ultima will live on!? Despite many changes including development teams and even publishers, the game itself continues to grow. With Stygian Abyss just being added in the game has seen a resurgence of players. The team is trying to make the game accessible to new and old players alike. Because Ultima?s systems are so open, the developers look more at giving players the tools to enhance the world they have already created.
